The central idea of SUWMIAC is the free exchange of information, experiences and results of recent research and development activities, in a number of topics related to multidisciplinary area of Applied Computing, between Microsoft researchers and professors and researchers from the ISTAR – Information Sciences Technologies and Architecture Research Center of the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL), as well as from other departments, schools and institutes of ISCTE-IUL, and also professors and researchers from other national and international academic institutions.
This editions central theme is “Engineering our World” with four related topics: “Software Engineering Lifecycle”, “Multimodal Human-Computer Interaction”, “Communicating via Human Activity, Gesture and Speech” and “Understanding, Augmenting and Building our World”.
Keynote delegates originate from Turkey, Spain and Portugal, and are affiliated with one company (Microsoft) or with several academic (Middle East Technical University, University of Zaragoza, Instituto Superior Técnico -UL, University of Coimbra, University of Aveiro, ISCTE-IUL), or with different research institutions (ISTAR-IUL, IEETA, IT, L2F, Aragon Institute for Engineering Research).

On July 30th, 2015, a high-level delegation of Guarda Nacional Republicana (http://gnr.pt/) composed by Major General Rui Moura, Major General Dias Pascoal, Colonel Pereira Nunes, Colonel Person, Colonel Maia Pires, Lieutenant Colonel Luis Machado and, of Tekever, by Engineer Ricardo Mendes, had the opportunity to observe several demonstrations of virtual and augmented reality simulation technologies, using Microsoft platforms and devices, in operation at the Virtual and Augmented Reality laboratory of ISTAR-IUL. Prof Miguel Dias and Prof. Sara Eloy along with ISTAR-IUL researchers, had the opportunity to exchange views with the visitors on the applications of the demonstrated technologies, in several areas, such as teaching and training of security scenarios at the school of GNR, or industrial product design of unmanned vehicles (drones), using VR and AR simulation.
On July 14th 2015, a high-level delegation of CINAMIL, the Research and Development Center of the Portuguese Military Academy (http://www.academiamilitar.pt/cinamil-centro-de-investigacao-da-am.html), visited the Virtual and Augmented Reality laboratory of ISTAR-IUL. The delegation was composed by Prof. António Joaquim Serralheiro, CINAMIL President, Lieutenant Colonel Luis Bernardino Machado, CINAMIL Research Lead and other research staff of CINAMIL. Prof. Alptekin Temizel from MTEU – Middle East Technical University of Turkey (http://www.metu.edu.tr/), was also visiting the lab at the same time. A research team from the Digital Living Spaces group of ISTAR-IUL, including Prof. Miguel Dias, Luis Coroado, Nelson Carvalho, Filipe Gaspar, Lázaro Ourique, Sara Oliveira and Pedro Caetano, showed several demonstrations of Augmented Reality, with applications for architecture design and urban planning, and of Virtual Reality, featuring a Digital Planetarium and a virtual tour to the ISCTE-IUL campus, with the stereo visualization and 3D sound synthesis features of the new immersive VR lab of ISTAR-IUL. As a result of the visit, several collaborative activities in the area of warfare simulation are taking place, starting with a visit to the CINAMIL Warfare Simulation System in operation at the Military Academy in Lisbon, followed by a visit to the School of Arms of the Portuguese Army in Mafra and participation in collaborative R&D initiatives, seminars and projects, between CINAMIL, ISCTE-IUL and Microsoft.

Roca Lisboa Gallery, in partnership with ISCTE and NAU presents the exhibition “Final Architecture Project: Technology and Sustainability".
The exhibition "CLOSE to cities and CLOSER to the people" took place in ISCTE-IUL between the 30th September and 4th October. It presented research on the understanding of the city network and of cities dynamics as an extension of the human mind. Analysis was done with space syntax theory, local measuring techniques and 3D virtual immersive simulation. Ambient Assistive Living (AAL) technologies were highlighted as an answer to support citizens and map their behaviors.
The exhibition showed a combined use of two levels of action:
i) first the design of a pedestrian network informed by the understanding of patterns of public life and the potential and weaknesses of some Lisbon’s public spaces regarding accessibility, uses and activities, comfort & image and socialization. Amongst several methods of analysis we used space syntax analysis and we correlated it with other local measuring techniques and 3D virtual immersive simulation.
ii) secondly the possibility of Ambient Assistive Living (AAL) technologies support citizens when carrying out daily tasks by providing a nonintrusive mapping of their behaviours. The opportunity of our participation as an Associated Project of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale enabled us to disclose and present our research to a wide international community as well as to Portuguese society and to all the ISCTE-IUL community. To be involved in the Triennale event, namely with two more international exhibitions running next to our at ISCTE-IUL enable to contact several different areas of architecture thinking.

The exhibition “Escola de Chicago: arranha-céus digitais” (School of Chicago: digital skyscrapers), took place in ISCTE-IUL on the 22th and 23th September 2014.
On the scope of the Integrated Master in Architecture from ISCTE-IUL, and starting from the possibilities brought by the Information Society we conducted a link between History, Building Technologies and the Digital Technologies developed at ISTAR-IUL. The exhibition "SCHOOL OF CHICAGO: digital skyscrapers", aimed and challenged the display and the revelation of the architectural culture of the Chicago School from the final of the 19th century to the first decades of the 20th century, by enhancing the historical knowledge as an active tool in today's digital universe.
The exhibition focused on the deployment of paradigmatic skyscrapers in Chicago, allowing multiple radiographic looks (urban morphology, construction foundations, structures, layouts, coatings, equipment, materials), through the use of digital technologies (immersive virtual reality, augmented reality and 3D video-mapping) that allowed us to observe this reality by innovative ways.
